Clutch Concentric Slave Cylinders

A concentric slave cylinder is an essential part of the hydraulic clutch system. Fitted inside the gearbox housing, it replaces the traditional external slave cylinder and release bearing by combining both functions into a single unit. Its job is to apply hydraulic pressure directly to the clutch diaphragm spring, allowing the driver to disengage the clutch and change gears smoothly.

Because of its position inside the gearbox, a failing cylinder can quickly affect overall clutch performance. Common symptoms include a clutch pedal that feels soft or spongy, difficulty engaging gears, or visible fluid leaks around the bell housing. If these signs are ignored, the problem can lead to complete clutch failure and costly repairs.

Understanding Replacement and Costs

Replacing a clutch concentric slave cylinder is a labour-intensive task, as the gearbox usually needs to be removed to access the part. This means labour costs often make up a large portion of the total bill. On average in the UK, the part itself may cost between £70 and £200, while a full replacement including labour typically ranges from £250 to £500.

Many drivers choose an aftermarket concentric slave cylinder as a cost-effective alternative to OEM parts. A good aftermarket unit can offer reliable performance at a lower price, provided it meets the correct specifications for the vehicle.

The time needed for replacement varies depending on the design of the car. In some cases, it can be completed within two hours, but if the gearbox is more complex, the work can take up to five hours. Consulting a qualified mechanic is the best way to get an accurate estimate for a specific vehicle.
